With your vision and my laser cutting expertise,
we’ll turn your dream into reality

Hi I’m Sarah Pike, laser cutting specialist.

I work with artists, professionals, and organizations to integrate laser cutting and engraving into their individual projects or larger scale creatively-inspired products.

I work collaboratively with clients online or in-person in my North Adams, MA studio—close to MASS MoCA and in the culturally-rich Berkshires. The studio is situated less than a three hours’ drive from New York City or Boston.

One of the missions of my business is to teach people the art of laser cutting, as well as give people who love to collaborate or hire me, the confidence to know that their dream projects can become reality — even if it seems like an impossible creative stretch at this moment in time.

I created FreeFall Laser to help artists, artisans, and those looking to produce artistically-inspired items — like you! — who want to

  • Incorporate laser cutting into projects without the overwhelm of learning a new technology

  • Receive the one-on-one support your custom projects deserve

  • Work with a variety of materials you select, instead of selecting from limited stock

  • Produce a unique and vibrant aesthetic, instead of a dry or predictable design

My clients come to me looking for solutions when they

  • Dream up a project and are uncertain how to manifest it all their own.

  • Want to bring an artist's touch to custom items that tell the story of or showcase the relationship with their clients, recipients, donors, supporters and partners.

  • Seek a creative and one-of-a-kind approach to event or wedding accessories, such as invitations or favors.

  • Aspire to learn how to laser cut and feel nervous about safety or intimidated by the new technology, are struggling to teach themselves by piecing together disparate resources, or are tired of learning through trial and error.

A glimpse into my creative journey and introduction to laser cutting

My artistic vision was cultivated early through a close relationship with my grandmother, whose artist parents instilled in her an appreciation of the natural world.

I later studied figurative painting and earned my MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. During this time, I also privately studied landscape painting with Fran Weston Hoyt, a student of my great-grandfather, Frank Vincent DuMond.

In an unexpected turn of events, I accepted a position as the printmaking studio manager for Bennington College, and my focus shifted to printmaking. The physical engagement of lithography and the dialogue between process and technology grounded my creative process and sparked an appetite for exploring the question What If in my mind.

In 2012, I leaped into a new frontier — laser cutting. I began experimenting by finely engraving Japanese paper and shaving partial ink layers off of prints.

My enthusiasm for laser cutting lies in developing techniques that wow but don’t scream laser cutting! To avoid detracting from the overall impact of a piece.

In my personal studio practice, art is a mindful and almost meditative experience. Since opening FreeFall Laser, I have returned to my artistic roots in the landscape— my sketchbook and habitual walks along local waterways are at the center of my practice.

I’d love to partner with you on your next creative project
